Track Maintenance Programme Begins

Each summer the entire railway is assessed by our Chief Engineer and a programme of track work is put together ready for the autumn. While the Hoyland Down yard looks okay, there was in fact a 3in (76mm) dip on the main line, caused by an underground drain. A group of children were tasked with surveying and levelling the line. A separate group of children performed the same activity in the coppice. Even though it rained for much of the morning, we encourage everyone outdoors!

This type of activity is a unitary exercise, requiring a mixture of leadership and teamwork. It is both physical and mental. Initially they are taught the key skills. Then throughout the remainder of the year, they are given more autonomy to complete the activity with little involvement from the staff. This activity is essential to maintaining a high standard of trackwork.
