The training scheme was inspired by one of our retired Trustees to ensure that all participants of the Downs Light Railway received structured learning. This scheme is centred around the driver training on our locomotives, but also encompasses the wider railway operation. To accompany this scheme, training progress books are issued to the student providing visual progress through all the required competencies. On completion of each progress book, the student receives continuous assessment until they are at the required standard. Once this is achieved they receive their qualification.
The Training Scheme consists of:
Training Progress Book 1 | Petrol Hydraulic Locomotives | Full Pass + Certificate + Blue Neckerchief
Training Progress Book 2 | Steam Locomotives | Basic Pass + Certificate + Red Neckerchief
Training Progress Book 3 | Steam Locomotives | Full Pass + Certificate + Green Neckerchief
The two courses for the steam locomotives allow for students to develop skills and knowledge. A Basic Pass gives them all the skills and experience to operate a steam locomotive under close supervision. As they become more experienced and hone their skills, the Full Pass cements this development to operate without close supervision.
